Durban racer Aadil ‘Adzo’ Badat shook up the 6 cylinder naturally aspirated list this weekend after he posted a career best of 11.1 seconds in his R32 swapped Mk1 Golf.
The 29-year-old ditched his 16v race car, The Rat, for the 6 pot set-up as the R32 swap seemingly replaces the ABF motor.
Badat posted a new personal best of 11.1 seconds @195 km/h with a 1.5 60ft. The car uses a Dicktator management system.
Badat backed up his times with an 11.4, 11.6 and 11.7 run at Dezzi Raceway on Saturday during the full prep event.
The team from Denzil’s Auto put together Adzo’s new race car in five days ahead of the full prep event. The shell of the car, which may look familiar, was Yoshlin Chetty’s ‘Indota 6’ FSI dragster.
Now the new ‘big dawg’ in town, Adzo has also put a target on his back in the process, as many Durban dragsters use the same platform.
Adzo has slingshot himself to the top of the 6 cylinder normally aspirated list, and needs to run an 11.0 to move ahead of Navehsan Pather.
Pather does not drive nor own the R32 golf anymore, which he ran the 11.0 Dezzi record with.
The rest of the field
Hot on Adzo’s tail was Thishaylin Naidoo and Adil Emam, who also posted new personal bests with their R32 swapped Golf 1’s.
Emam ran a 12.3 second @ 182 km/h quarter mile for a new best, while Naidoo posted 12.1 @ 182 km/h in his blue R32 screamer. Emam’s car was built by AE Autoworx. The car is owned by Vernon Riverts.
Subash Ragunand had some difficulties with his car on the day and managed to squeeze a best of 12.31 @ 184 km/h. His personal best in the R32 swap, the only Golf on the list to be built by RND Performance, is 12.1 seconds.
Denzil’s Auto has dominated the list with their cars, which appear to be the fastest R32 builds in the county at this stage.
Ashwin’s R36 surprises
Ashley Giquel showed up to the party with a R36 swapped DSG Mk2 Golf, which also made waves with a new personal best of 11.8 seconds.
Giquel has been known to build some of the most famous 6-pot swaps in the country, including that of Sanjay Premlal’s award winning VR6.
Giquel took second place in the 6 cylinder aspirated class on Saturday, behind Adzo and ahead of Thishaylin.
There are still many racers, including Yoshlin Chetty, who are eager to move up the list after Adzo shook the tree.
The next best thing would be an 11 flat or an entry into the 10 second bracket, which would be impressive for a naturally aspirated car.
