“The last of VW’s great vehicles,” as many online call it.
At 63-years-old, Miten Naran’s 1969 VW Beetle is still a serious contender on the South African drag racing scene despite its age.
Competing in the 4-cylinder aspirated class, Miten ran new personal best of 11.4s @ 193km/h at Mkuze airfield.
The flying attorney as he is commonly referred to, and its no wonder. Miten also pops the occasional wheelie off the line, making this a crowd favourite.
At the rear end sits a Toyota S series ‘Beams’ power plant running on full methanol.
Custom built throttle bodies suck oxygen into the combustion chamber and gives it a raw, almost deafening tone.
Besides the roaring aspirated thump, the bright orange paint makes this a seriously obnoxious drag vehicle.
The Japanese power is sent through a Beetle gearbox which was modified with some “aftermarket gears”, Miten explained.
“The MSE shifter inside was also modified by Deon and Nathaniel from Bodyline Customs. The car itself was put together by MGM Engineering together with Bodyline,” Miten said.
After Kumaran from ElectroBoost gets his hands on the car, the Beetle can push out 200kw at the wheels.
Prior to Mkuze drags in September, Miten’s personal best was an 11.7 quarter mile.
His fastest exit speed for the event was 195km/h.
He didn’t stipulate what he had done to shave off 0.3 seconds of his time, but nobody’s going to hand you KFC’s secret recipe right?
Whether or not Miten’s entering the 10’s club soon remains a mystery.
But the future does look bright for the Flying Attorney, and that’s besides the glare from the sun hitting the paint.
