Cape Town’s traffic among the worst in the world

The Mother City’s traffic is so bad, it stands shoulder to shoulder next to some of the worst in the world including the likes of New York and Istanbul.

This is according to the 2024 INRIX Global Traffic Scorecard, which studies transportation data and trends among 946 urban areas worldwide.

The report stated that Cape Town residents lost 94 hours last year because of traffic, 13% higher than 2023. That is almost double than that of Johannesburg and three times Durbanites.

  3. Chicago – USA: 102 hours in 2024
  4. London – United Kingdom: 101 hours
  5. Mexico City – Mexico: 97 hours
  6. Paris – France: 97 hours
  7. Jakarta – Indonesia: 89 hours
  8. Los Angeles -USA: 88 hours
  9. Cape Town – South Africa: 94 hours
  10. Brisbane – Australia: 84 hours

The key findings of the INRIX 2024 Global Traffic Scorecard provide a quantifiable benchmark for governments and cities across the world to measure progress to improve urban mobility and track the impact of spending on smart city initiatives.

Pretoria completes the top three, with 45 hours lost due to residents in traffic, BusinessTech reported.

Durban lost 35 hours Pietermaritzburg 33 hours, Gqeberha lost 30 hours while East London lost 27 hours) due to traffic.

Welkom in the Free State only six hours lost to traffic each year.
