Cape Town drag racer Charl Petrus was elated this past weekend after finally managing to get his Golf 1 over the 402 metre line in 11 seconds.
His naturally aspirated 2L 20v Golf 1 – Paw Patrol, is one of the few all-motor Golf 1s running down Killarney Raceway.
Petrus represents team Nisma Performance, which works out of Port Elizabeth in the Eastern cape.

The Cape speedster dabbled in the low 12’s on Saturday morning for a couple runs before finally breaking the 11-second barrier.
Petrus raced in the D class, which houses cars from 11.000 – 11.999 seconds.

The Paw Patrol Golf 1 ran a new personal best time of 11.955 @181 km/h and was more than smiles afterwards.
The 20v engine does not run standard, however, and includes a number of upgrades.

The mod list
The original cams were thrown out and replaced with Polo Cup cams. The head has been worked while a STK rev kit was added into the mix.
Toyota 45mm throttles induce air to the combustion chamber, while 2200cc injectors supply the fuel.
A 2L crank with 82,5mm Polo Cup pitons with crank rods from Audi ensure the strokes are faster than usual.
The full methanol igniting the chamber helps those Cup pistons move faster as well.

Power is delivered to the wheels via a 02A cable shifting gearbox while the open diff gets him off the line quicker.
Petrus indicated that he would like to race in KwaZulu-Natal someday, which he dubbed “the home of Golf 1s”.
