Durban drag racer Christopher Kolia comes from a generation of drivers that were young and reckless with their 16v ABF swapped VW Golf 1’s.
He’s no longer playing on the streets though, nowadays, he makes a few appearances at Dezzi Raceway. It’s there that he races his naturally aspirated ABF swapped G1 on ‘the juice’.
Last month, Christopher reached a new personal best of 12.54 seconds @ 174km/h and a 1.7s 60ft.
Keeping it simple works…
The Phoenix resident swapped the Golf 1 in his father’s front yard, and according to him, “ it’s bone stock”.
“It’s a bone stock abf motor purchased from MYM auto world in Joburg. It’s a Seat edition ABF motor and has never been opened from the day I purchased it. Still has a single throttle, the original head gasket etc,” he told Auto Rush.
Veshan Rajkumar of Veez Auto Trix keeps the car in good racing condition and also provides track support on occasion.
Rajkumar, who is also a drag racer, owns the fastest naturally aspirated ABF in South Africa – ‘Ghostbuster’ at 10.8 seconds.
Candy Gounden from Havenside in Chatsworth tunes the car which runs on a mix of nitro and methanol.
An 044 fuel pump with upgraded fuel line and 1000cc Bosch injectors supplies the juice to the combustion chamber.
Supporting mods
Christopher opted to spend more time on the supporting modifications like the gearbox, suspension.
Race slicks are thrown onto the front end for events while he uses a normal tyre and rim set-up at the rear end. Surprisingly, he keeps all the seats on and races the car as a “ factory trim”.
“The gearbox is modified. The gearing is still spiral cut gears but it has a shorter ratio. I also have a LSD in there which is from M-trac. It’s a street car and still full trim except for the front wheels.
“All the small fabrications like the oil catch can and adaptors are made by myself as I’m an engineer,” he added.
