Indota reborn: Durban boys build Golf in 9 days for SA drag finals

By Jehran Naidoo for Auto Rush

A group of hard-core drag racing enthusiasts from Durban built a VW Golf 1 in nine days ahead of SA Drag National finals at Killarney Raceway this weekend.

The final chapter of the MSA drag calendar will see dragsters descend to the mother City in hopes of being crowned champion.

Owner and driver, Yoshlin Kyle Chetty, decided to drop his former citi golf, Indota 6, due to weight issues.

Yoshlin removed the 2.0 litre FSI power plant from Indota 6, tweaked it up and installed it in the new shell.

“I needed a lighter shell because my yellow car but too heavy. It is not easy to find a good condition car and I was not willing to gutter it,” Yoshlin explained.

The dream team

“A good friend of mine named Inny Khan gave me the shell for free. I removed the FSI engine from Indota 6 and put it in the new car but we made changes.

“I wanted to make more power so it is now a fully forged engine. Trivolin Pather from Denzil’s Auto helped us with the parts. Aadil Badat also got spares for us from PE. My panel beater Deon Kathraya was one of the main people behind the build.

“Donny Govender from JE Motorsport did the Fueltech wiring. He opened up his shop for us at 11pm and did the smart coils,” Yoshlin explained.

A fully custom suspension, keeping the nose tucked, was built by Derren Redman at Nexgen Automotive.

Naturally aspirated or nothing

Yoshlin, like many racers in South Africa, prefers his car naturally aspirated. But achieving power and fast times on an n/a engine comes at great cost.

Not just financially. Finding the right team to make the parts fit together in harmony takes something you can’t buy, teamwork.

If driver, tuner and builder don’t know the end goal, the car won’t run as it should.

On the trailer, loaded for Killarney Race track.

But this ship is in order and Yoshlin is now hunting down the low 11 and early ten second bracket. Prior to this build, Yoshlin ran a best time of 11.6 seconds with ‘Indota 6’.

“This time round I am just looking to test her. I’m expecting to hit the low 11s but next event I will be chasing the times,” Yoshlin added.
