It seems as though the VVL fever that has overwhelmed the Western Cape street and drag racing scene has settled in KwaZulu-Natal.
The VVL virus has gotten a hold of former street racers who now want to make a name for themselves where it matters – on the track.

A list of ten drivers has already been compiled, and is led by KZN’s quickest naturally aspirated SR20 – Baboon VVL.
Vivek Chetty’s 12.2s run at Mkuze still stands as the highest in the province and was not beaten this weekend at the Front Wheel Drive shootout.
A New challenger

But Newlands racer Sahir Maharaj came excruciatingly close to the top spot. Straight of the trailer, Maharaj’s SR20VE swapped Golf 1 ran a 12.494 @178km/h on a 1.8s 60ft.
The run puts him at number 3 on the list, 0.05 seconds behind Buddy VE- the VVL Toyota Ugly Duckling.
An elated Maharaj said he wanted to send a special thanks to his wife and team for their help.

“We got let down with our tow truck on Friday and didn’t have a way to get the car to Dezzi. My friend Rinesh let me use his trailer at the last moment. It was a bit hectic but we managed to get the car there in time.
“My wife Natalie came to my rescue as well. The car had some problems on the line and she ran with the booster pack to help me. My team is small but I’m still grateful for my team,” he told Auto Rush.
The rest of the pack

At number 4 on the list with his new personal best, Kresan Naidoo ran a 12.76 @ 176km/h. Naidoo bumped up a few spots with his Nissan Sentra 200 STI.
Meanwhile, the only import shape on the list belongs to Tayolin Govender. I’d be lying if I said I knew what shape it is but all I know, is that it’s SR20 powered.

The gold Nissan ran a best time of 13.52 seconds @174km/h over the quarter mile. That puts Tayolin at number 6 on the list.
Only Vivek, Kreson, Sahir and Tayolin competed this weekend at the front wheel drive shootout. But it is likely that others will want to move up the list soon.
