Omoda and Jaecoo makes debut splash in South African market

Two years ago, if someone said the names Omoda and Jaecoo, you would think they’re referring to a tale about an Afrikaner family.

Today, those names are known as the emerging subsidiaries of Chery Automobiles that have already made a dent in the South African market.

The Chinese car manufacturer’s expansion with the new brand has taken root in SA, with the Omoda C5 already a common sighting on roads. The C5 is the first generation of Omoda vehicles and comes in a GT, Elegance and Lux line variant.

The C9 is Omoda’s flagship model and will be launched later in October.

“OMODA is a new, modern and luxurious vehicle brand that showcases what can be done when a brand is not hindered by legacy technology or design,” says Tony Liu, the Executive Deputy General Manager of Chery South Africa.

“Every aspect of this range of products, from vehicle design, performance, technology and driving pleasure, has been designed from a clean slate and will truly surprise and delight South African motorists,” says Liu.

Charl Potgieter, Managing Executive at Absa Vehicle and Asset Finance, is positive about the bank’s partnership with Omoda.

“We are delighted that our collaboration with OMODA is centred on making a meaningful contribution to the local economy. We plan to drive innovation and accessibility in South Africa’s fast-paced automotive financing sector,” said Potgieter.

JAECOO, meanwhile, is gearing up to welcome not only the plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) version of the J7 and the J8. There is also the new fully electric J6.
